WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WREX) - A Illinois State Trooper vehicle was left destroyed Saturday morning after being involved in a two car crash in Winnebago County.

According to authorities, a trooper was assisting a driver on the side of road near I39 and Baxter Road when his squad car was slammed into by another driver.

The vehicle was driven by 45-year-old Aaron Honert, of Belvidere. Authorities say Honert was drunk at the time of the crash.

Neither the Trooper nor Honert was injured in the crash, according to police officials.

“Troopers risk their lives daily to protect the public. We ask that you do your part by paying attention as you drive, and obey Scott’s Law,” stated ISP District 16 Acting Commander, Lieutenant Joseph Blanchette. “These crashes are completely preventable, always drive sober and move over when you approach a stationary vehicle on the side of the road,” added Lieutenant Blanchette.

Honert was placed in the Winnebago County Jail and charged with violating Scott's Law and driving under the influence. This is the fifth Scott's law-related crash in 2021 according to the State police officials.
