ROCKFORD (WREX) — Is social media to blame for the riot that happened at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6? One local expert says that is not the case.
Andrea Guzman, an Assistant Professor of Communications at Northern Illinois University says there are other factors involved. One of those factors is how people see and understand the world. She says what happened brings the question of how we moderate social media.
"The view points people expressed via social media were not caused by social media. They are cultural view points. They are view points that exist outside of social media."
Social media platforms are continuing to crackdown on fringe groups and conspiracy theories following the riot. President Trump has had accounts banned from Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat.
