ROCKFORD (WREX) — After previously announcing that it would close due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ronit's Kitchen will now stay open thanks to a new owner stepping in.

The Mediterranean restaurant was set to close on Wednesday. Instead, it will soon become, "Guzel." That is Turkish for, "beautiful." Community activist Mustafa Abdball says he could not see the restaurant at Indoor City Market meet its end. That's why he stepped up to by it.

"This is one of our goals as organizations to support our community because we don't need more businesses to shut down, we need more to open," said Abdall.

Abdall says he worked with a group called Winnebago Emerging Small Business Assistance to make this possible. He adds that the new menu will be similar to the menu customers know at Ronit's Kitchen.

Abdall takes ownership of the restaurant on Thursday.
