Father of Andrew ‘AJ’ Freund may take a plea deal this week

(WREX) — The father of 5-year-old Andrew "AJ" Freund may take a plea deal later this week, according to his attorney.

Andrew Freund Sr. appeared in a court on Wednesday and is now scheduled to appear again on Friday.

Freund's wife, JoAnn Cunningham, pled guilty to murder charges last December and was sentenced to 35 years in prison in July.

Police discovered AJ's body in a shallow grave near their home in Crystal Lake in April 2019.

Cunningham and Andrew Freund Sr. were charged with first degree murder after the body was found.

Along with first-degree murder, Freund and Cunningham also were charged with aggravated battery, aggravated domestic battery and failure to report a missing child or child death. Freund also was charged with concealment of a homicidal death.

Cunningham ended up pleading guilty to murder and having all the other charges dropped.
