Stateline healthcare workers join statewide strike for more pay and PPE

ROCKFORD (WREX) — Across the state of Illinois, healthcare workers with SEIU Local 73 are striking against the University of Illinois Hospital in Chicago. The union says it wants better pay, more PPE, and respect. Dozens of healthcare workers in the Stateline joined the strike on Monday and Tuesday.

"We are the ones helping with the pandemic. Who do you go to when you are sick? The doctors," said Irene Buker.

"Because we are such a small entity here and there is a larger one in Chicago, a lot of people don't know we are apart of UIC. So this is our way of showing we a part of one team," said Lakeisha Whitaker.

13 WREX reached out to the UIC in Rockford. It directed us to the Chicago office. In response, the hospital released a statement, saying quote "we are hopeful that through continued dialogue, we will be able to reach fair and fiscally responsible multi-year contract agreements with all the represented parties. We remain committed to addressing key issues and believe much can be resolved through further dialogue. We are prepared to continue good faith bargaining as long as it takes"

As of Tuesday, no agreement between the hospital and the union has been made.
