ROCKFORD (WREX) — SwedishAmerican opened its Riverwest Clinic back in January of 2019.
When the ribbon was cut on the new facility, leaders at Riverwest expressed focus on getting involved with the community on the southwest side of Rockford beyond just doctor and patient.
That mission began with the 2019 school year.
The clinic handed out 100 backpacks to students to help them prepare for their return to the classroom.
Fast forward to 2020, specifically 815 Day, and the same charity took place.
The only difference: double the backpacks.
200 were given to people needs help to get ready for the school year.
"The staff both at Riverwest Clinic and Creekside Clinic on Riverside collected some school supplies for some of the kids in our community to go back to school," Riverwest Dr. Cori Maund said.
The backpack giveaway is just one of many different ways Riverwest tries to support its community.
The clinic has taken part in health fairs, church events and several activities for kids like a Trunk or Treat day.
"We've really done a lot in the community over the last almost two years," Riverwest/Creekside Operations manager Angelica Aranda said.
"Not just here at our clinic. Wherever we've been asked to go within this communtiy we have really reached and gone and participated in those events."
As a native of the southwest side, Angelica Aranda has extra motivation to integrate the clinic into the 815.
"It's an honor to be able to give back to that community," Aranda said.
Though the COVID-19 pandemic presents a new challenge, it will not stop the staff who are dedicated to the clinic and to giving back to the people they serve.
"That's one of the reasons I came to join Swedish-American, it's clear that they really do care about their community. I think our clinic is one of the more involved with the community," Maund said.
"We see so many people from this area so we just like to give back to the community and show our love and support right back."
Riverwest Clinic is located at 815 Marchesano Drive, another way it embodies the Rockford community.
