Local nurse encourages people to donate breast milk

ROCKFORD (WREX) — August is National Breastfeeding Awareness Month and one local nurse wants to remind community members about the importance of breastfeeding.

According to SwedishAmerican, there is a greater demand for breast milk during the Covid-19 pandemic. Parents are looking to give their babies breast milk to protect them from infections. So, officials are asking moms who are able to provide milk to sign up and donate.

"NICUs in particular have premature babies and they have ill babies that need breast milk," says Nichole Thurman, a registered nurse at SwedishAmerican. "The breast milk is their medicine. It is life-saving medicine for them."

Swedes teamed up with Mothers' Milk Bank of Western Great Lakes to open a human milk bank depot last December.
