ROCKFORD (WREX) — Another drug shows promising signs for treating COVID-19.

A new British study identifies dexamethasone, a commonly used steroid drug, as a possible treatment for the virus. Patients who got the medication had a lower risk of dying. One doctor at SwedishAmerican says while there is optimism with this drug, it is just one study that shows a specific type of patient who got better.

In this case, it was someone who would've needed a ventilator or oxygen.

"It is a relatively inexpensive medication," Dr. Thomas Carey, SwedishAmerican's Director of Pharmacy Services, says. "We use it pretty regularly, and I think we know, for the most part, the types of patients who would most likely benefit from the medication."

SwedishAmerican says it is hopeful future studies with dexamethasone continue showing beneficial results.
