ROCKFORD (WREX)  — We are learning more about the Rockford Park District's plan to hire young people as part of a new employment program.

The park district is getting $500,000 to employ 100 local youth this summer. It's part of the COVID-19 Summer Youth Employment Program (C-SYEP). There are job opportunities available in nearly all areas of the park district, including youth sports and park maintenance. The main goal is to help young people develop skills for employment and earn a minimum of 180 hours of entry-level work experience.

"As job coaches, we will have the opportunity to work with each youth and young adult directly," said Job Coach Joe Meersman. "Each coach will have a certain number of youth or young adults assigned to them to help ensure leadership and employability skills are developed throughout the entire summer."
