Fifth person in Winnebago County tests positive for COVID-19

WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WREX) — Winnebago County announces another case of COVID-19 Sunday, bringing the total number to 5.

The new case in Winnebago County is a resident in their 20s, according to the Winnebago County Health Department. Health officials did not say whether they believe the patient made contact with another known case.

JoDaviss County and Stephenson County join the list of counties in the northern Illinois region Sunday with one positive COVID-19 case each.

Here's what we know of the five confirmed cases in Winnebago County:

In a news release Sunday, the health department says local health departments are working with the Illinois Department of Public Health to notify people who may have been in close contact with positive cases.

"To slow the spread of COVID-19, it is important for everyone to take steps to prevent exposure," the news release said. "Stay home and only leave your house for basic needs, including visiting the doctor or buying groceries, medicine, gasoline or similar supplies."
