BYRON (WREX) — The Byron Nuclear Plant celebrates two big milestones Monday.
Officials at the plant commemorated the facility's 45th year since construction began. The group also recognizes the plant's 4,500th straight day of carbon-free electricity production. Part of the celebration included a cake made to look like the nuclear plant.
"It's a huge accomplishment for us because our number one goal is to generate electricity for the communities," said Byron Nuclear Plant Manager Harris Welt. "And by doing that since 2007, we're accomplishing our main goal to do that carbon-free and safely."
Exelon Generation say the Byron Nuclear Plant produces nearly 2,500 megawatts of carbon-free electricity each day, powering more than 2.3 million homes and businesses.
