Former Winnebago County Corrections Officer charged with hitting a family member

BOONE COUNTY (WREX) -- A former Winnebago County Corrections officer and another woman are charged with domestic battery of a family member.

Court documents obtained by 13 WREX say Leonard Spates hit a family member, who is a minor, several times in the legs with an extension cord. Documents say it happened twice, around January 24, 2020 and February 11, 2020.

Spates was arrested on February 11, according to court documents and had video court on February 12. Court documents show he was released on a $1,500 recognizance bond.

He's officially charged with one count of domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor.

According to the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office, Spates was a corrections officer. He has not worked for the sheriff's office since January 2019.

Spates will be back in court on February 18 for a pre-trial hearing.

Tiffany Barracks-Spates was also arrested and also charged with domestic battery. Court records show Leonard Spates paid her $2,500 bond.

Barracks-Spates was also charged with two counts of resisting a peace officer. Barracks Spates will be in court on March 10,
