SANGAMON COUNTY, Ill. (WEEK) — A Central Illinois high school junior died Monday after getting the flu, then pneumonia.
A spokesperson with Ball-Chatham School District in Sangamon County, Illinois said Joey Sandhaas, 16, ultimately died from sepsis after his illness escalated.
Our sister station in Peoria, WEEK, was told Sandhaas used to play for the school basketball team, but was not currently on the team. In a Facebook post, the district said:
"Joey was an amazing young man with limitless potential. Joey was kind, and a friend to all he met. He loved to high jump in track and play basketball. He also loved country music and his dog, Jasper. Most of all, he loved his family and friends more than words can express."
Out of respect for those grieving, the district canceled all boys basketball games Tuesday night.
