IL treasurer visits Rockford on college affordability tour

ROCKFORD (WREX) — Treasurer Michael Frerichs came to Rock Valley College to talk about making college more affordable.

People in the crowd gave a number of ideas, from teaching and talking about financial literacy in school to reducing private student loan interest rates.

People offered a number of suggestions to the treasurer about making college more affordable, including educating students more about the expense.

"Too many young people today are graduating with a mountain of debt, unable to buy a car or buy a house or start a family. And that's a problem, not just for the, but for our entire economy," said Frerichs.

Last year lawmakers authorized the state treasurer to invest up to $750 million to make higher education more affordable and ease student loan debt.
