Man sentenced for kidnapping a child, 1, during a traffic stop in Boone County

BOONE COUNTY (WREX) — An Illinois man was sentenced on aggravated kidnapping charges on Tuesday.

Darcell Booker, 35, of Naperville, was sentenced to 13.5 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections on Tuesday by a Boone County Judge.

Authorities say the kidnapping happened on Oct 18,. of 2018.

Booker was the passenger of a vehicle traveling on I-90 in Boone County. While traveling, the vehicle was pulled over for a traffic violations by Illinois State Police.

During the stop, officers were alerted to drugs being inside the vehicle and proceeded to search the vehicle.

At this point, the driver was in the the Trooper's squad car, but her one-year-old child was still in the backseat of the vehicle with Booker, according to police.

Police say when officers asked Booker to step out of the car, he climbed to the front seat of the vehicle and drove off with the one-year-old still in the vehicle.

The child was returned to her family four hours later, according to police.

Booker was taken into custody on Nov. 21, 2018.
