City of Rockford new owner of former Magna Supermarket

ROCKFORD (WREX) —The City of Rockford is now the owners of the former Magna Supermarket on East State Street.

Mayor McNamara made the announcement at Wednesday morning's Miracle Mile meeting.

The city says the owner agreed to transfer the property, located in the 4000 block of E. State St. just west of Don Carter Lanes, after extensive negotiation.

The city filed a lawsuit in Circuit Court asking a judge to order the owner of the building to either make necessary repairs to the building, demolish it or redevelop it after years of vacancy.

The owners agreed to transfer the property to the city in lieu of foreclosure, along with a payment to the city to help defray costs to tax payers.

The city says it's another effort to fight blight in the community.

"This property has been vacant and deteriorating for more than 20 years," said Mayor McNamara in a press release. "It's critical to have options with this property so we can continue to improve the Miracle Mile area."

The city says they intend to work with developers to seek redevelopment options for the building and property. Should those options fail, the city says they could demolish the building to make room for new development.
