Sunnyside marijuana dispensary opens at 6 a.m. New Year’s Day

ROCKFORD (WREX) — Adult-use marijuana will become legalized on Wednesday, making Illinois the second Midwestern state to broadly allow the sale of it.

Sunnyside, formerly known as MedMar, will open at 6 a.m. Wednesday. The dispensary says people should arrive early, expect crowds and lines, and to dress warm.

"Check the weather and bundle up to stay safe and comfortable," Sunnyside's website says.

After Wednesday, the dispensary will open at 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. onward.

If you plan to purchase recreational marijuana on Wednesday, you should bring your ID and cash. ATMs will be on site.

Sunnyside also wants to remind Illinois residents that it is still not legal to walk around with cannabis in public. You must be at your home to use it.

Sunnyside is located at 2696 McFarland Road.

The other dispensary in the city is Mapleglen Care Center, which is located at 4777 Stenstrom Road.

It says it will not open for recreational sales on Wednesday because it wants to focus on its medical marijuana patients.
