Rockford Rescue Mission feeds 500 people on Christmas Eve.

Hundreds of people ate a traditional Christmas dinner thanks to a local charity.

The Rockford Rescue Mission fed 500 people for their 55th annual Christmas Eve dinner.

The charity funded the meal off of donations from the community since they accept no money from national or state organizations.

Staff at Rockford Rescue Mission like Marketing and Communication Director Crystal Savage say the event focuses on more than just filling stomachs, rather it's also a time to build relationships.

"Just knowing the Rockford Rescue Mission is a safe place and a loving place to get a meal, it's just a remarkable feeling for so many people," Savage said.

The event also gave out stuffed animals and blankets as Christmas presents.
