Illinois State Police squad car hit while helping driver on the side of the road

(WGEM) — An Illinois State Police squad car was hit Sunday night in southern Illinois, making it the 27th trooper hit from drivers violating Scott's Law this year.

According to a press release, the Illinois State Police vehicle was parked on the inside shoulder of Interstate 72 near milepost 21 in Barry, Illinois around 7:15 p.m.

Police activated the emergency lights to the vehicle to help someone stuck in the center median after sliding off the snow covered road.

Police said Courtney Vaughn, 31, of Quincy approached the scene heading westbound when she tried to pass a truck tractor semi-trailer. The release said she lost control of her vehicle on the snow covered road, ran off the road, and hit the rear quarter panel of the parked and unoccupied ISP squad car.

No injuries were reported.

The squad car sustained minor damage and Vaughn's vehicle was towed from the scene.

Police issued her a citation for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident and Scott's Law/Move Over Law.
