Edgewater neighborhood collects food items for ten holiday dinners

ROCKFORD (WREX) — A Rockford neighborhood is coming together to feed ten families in need this holiday season.

The Edgewater neighborhood located off of Auburn Street in Rockford held a food drive at Oxford Park Saturday afternoon. Neighborhood community members had the goal of feeding ten families by collecting donations of turkeys, canned goods, and other traditional holiday foods.

Donors could drive up to the park and place their donations in the back of another neighbor's pick-up truck.

Organizers of the food drive say community members want to help out, they just need somewhere to start.

"We asked them to bring a can of corn, maybe a turkey," says Stacie Walton, an organizer of the food drive. "People are bringing bags of food. People care about their community, whether it's their neighborhood or their community as the city of Rockford, but if you ask people and you give them the opportunity to do the right thing, they will. "

Within the first 20 minutes of the food drive, the group had already collected over ten turkeys.
