Athlete of the Week – Tucker Mumford

POLO (WREX) — Polo senior Tucker Mumford is our new WREX Athlete of the Week.

Mumford helped the Marcos win an 8-Man football state championship a few weeks ago, and transitioned right into basketball season after that. Polo won a Regional championship on the hardwood last year, but lost a lot of key players from that team, leaving Mumford as one of the returning leaders.

"We'll try to pride ourselves on defense this year," Mumford said.

Mumford will also be called upon to put the ball in the hoop.

"We'll run most of our stuff through him," Polo head coach Matt Messer said.

Mumford is able to use his big frame to get inside for buckets, but he can also step out and hit from long range to keep defenses off balance.

Polo silenced the doubters on the football field this fall, and the Marcos are ready to do the same on the court this winter.

"It taught us that you need to work as a team and you can't do it all on your own," Mumford said of the state title run. "We as a team need to work on getting closer together just like the football team was."

Mumford is the oldest of four siblings, so he takes on a leadership role at home as well. He hopes all that leadership experience helps yield positive results for the Marcos on the basketball court.
