Community members “fill the truck” for shelter animals in need

ROCKFORD (WREX) — A Rockford company hosts a donation drive to support animals in need.

XPO Logistics hosted the Sixth Annual Fill the Truck Semi Drive at The Home Depot in Rockford on Saturday. The drive aims to provide shelter for animals in need.

Donors could drop off cleaning supplies, toys, food and any other pet care items in exchange for a five-dollar Home Depot coupon. Those in attendance also had the opportunity to interact with dogs available for adoption from area shelters and services.

Organizers of the event say during a time of struggle the furriest family members often suffer first and their goal is to change that.

"Though we have a good economy, there are still people that have short comings. This helps them with the short comings because unfortunately, a lot of times, the pets are the first ones to suffer," said XPO Logistics Driver Sales Representative Don Rolon. "So this way it gives them the option to help them and help their pets."

The drive also benefits Circle of Change, a veteran support dog program for vets suffering from PTSD or traumatic brain injuries.
