ROCKFORD (WREX) — A 60-year-old woman is dead after a fire breaks out at the Great Oaks apartment complex, according to Winnebago County Coroner Bill Hintz.

Cherry Valley Fire Chief Joe Corl says calls came in around 6:30 a.m. for a fire at a 32-unit building the 4900 block of Linden Road.

Six of the units are a complete loss.

According to officials, everyone else in the building was safely evacuated.

One dog was also rescued.

One firefighter was also hurt while battling the blaze, but is expected to be okay.

Greats Oaks, along with the Red Cross and Salvation Army, are working with the victims of the fire to find a new place to live.

Multiple crews are working to put out the still active fire including Rockford, Byron and Roscoe fire departments.

Officials say they are not sure how long they will be battling the fire and to avoid the area indefinitely.
