HIV vaccine possible in a few years

ROCKFORD (WREX) — It is an incurable virus that has killed tens of millions of people across the world. Now, health experts say there could be a vaccine for HIV.

Three vaccines are entering the final stages of testing. Scientists are hopeful about the trials, which could still fail. One pharmacist from SwedishAmerican says the possibility of eliminating the virus is astonishing.

"It's been taking a while to actually come up with the technology to develop vaccines. I know we have plenty of options for treatment now, but a vaccine would be huge in preventing the spread," said pharmacy resident Jeremy Kosacz.

Clinical results for one of the vaccines are expected in late 2020 or early 2021. Results for the other two are expected in 2021 and 2023.
