Evan Leake


Morning Anchor

Evan joined WREX in June of 2017 and was named anchor of 13 News Today in May of 2019.

He grew up in the west suburbs of Chicago and found a passion for writing at a young age. Evan graduated from Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri where he majored in Sports Communications. Evan‘s career in TV started as an intern at WGEM in Quincy, Illinois. He then worked as a sports photographer in Quincy until his college graduation. Evan joined WREX as a reporter/photographer, working his way up to the anchor desk. Since coming to Rockford, Evan has been able to cover a good mix of news and sports, from interviewing Green Bay Packers defensive end Dean Lowry to sitting down with Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker following his election win.

Evan‘s love for writing dates back to early childhood when he would write episode scripts of his favorite cartoons.

While not at work, Evan loves cooking, playing basketball, working out or reading in his spare time.

Little known facts about Evan:

  • I have been 6’5″ since middle school and I think it made my principal not like me because he needed to look up to me.
  • In high school I got better grades in Spanish than English. I would write full stories in Spanish while struggling with the symbolism of The King and I.
  • I’m an amateur foodie and love finding new things to cook and new ways to cook my favorite foods.
  • I’m a hat fanatic. Working to collect hats of all major sports teams (NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL).
