BELVIDERE (WREX) — Belvidere Chrysler announces more layoffs on the day an announced 1,300 layoffs go into effect.
According to a voicemail from the Belvidere Chrysler plant manager saying, “it was determined that further reductions in our workforce were necessary.”
Multiple employees tell 13 WREX the announcement was unexpected.
Back in February, the plant announced 1,371 would be laid off as the plant moves to a two-shift operation.
Before, the the plant operated with three different crews that work four, 10-hour days over the course of six days. But starting May 6, the plant changed to a traditional two-shift operation. Workers will work eight-hour shifts over five days; the plant will have two shifts.
Belvidere Chrysler sent the following statement to 13 WREX:
“Following a full review of its operations at the Belvidere Assembly Plant, FCA has determined that additional staffing actions were needed to properly align with the plant’s return to a two shift operating pattern that began today. As a result, the Company notified the state of Illinois, the city of Belvidere and the UAW today that the total number of people who could be potentially impacted is being revised to 1,403.”
13 WREX is following this story and will bring updates as they become available.
