First Grade Teacher at Holy Family instills confidence in students

ROCKFORD (WREX) – First graders at Holy Family Catholic School are eager to learn because of how much they love spending time with their teacher, Sarah Fey.

“She’s really sweet, she’s always there for you, she teaches us really good stuff. she’s really loving,” student Stella Nelson said.

Nelson nominated Fey for the Teacher of the Week award, and she said she wishes Fey could be her teacher forever.

Fey said she loves spending time with her first grades, and she sees them grow so much over the year.

“We have a lot of fun in the first grade, we work really, really hard. They come to me in the fall, they’re unsure, they can’t read, their confidence builds in first grade,” Fey said.

Fey helps her students learn to read, count money, and more, and gives them confidence in all that they do.

“I often say that I am a mom before I am a teacher, they are very comfortable in my room. I am very encouraging, I think they’re very confident when they leave my room, and very happy,” she said.

Other teachers in the school said she is loved by co-workers and always has great ideas. One teacher, Tricia Nelson, said the students can’t get enough of Mrs. Fey.

“My son had her a couple of years ago and she is a fabulous teacher. She loves those kids, she cares for those kids like they are her own,” Second Grade Teacher Tricia Nelson said.

Fey’s students think she is more than deserving of the Teacher of the Week award because she is just so nice to them.

“She teaches us a lot of nice reading, and she teaches us fun stuff, and she’s really nice, and I always wanted her to be my teacher,” student Albert Altamore said.

Fey said she spends each year getting students prepared for the rest of their academic career, and she sees students make all kinds of strides every single day.

“They’re growth in first grade is so significant. I tease them all the time that I don’t want them to leave me for second grade but they’re on their way,” she said.
