Athlete of the Week – Frankie Schiro

ROCKFORD – Boylan senior soccer and basketball player Frankie Schiro is our newest WREX Athlete of the Week, sponsored by Rock Valley College.

Schiro has overcome a lot of adversity her senior year. In December, her family’s house caught on fire, leaving them living out of a hotel for a couple of months. Shortly before the basketball playoffs began, she hit her head hard on the court in a game against Hononegah to decide the conference championship. She went through all that all while dealing with Crohn’s Disease, which forces her to get regular infusion treatments.

Frankie has faced it all and embraced the challenge of finding success through the struggle.

“Knowing I’ve been to the hospital a few more times than anyone has experienced in their life, and just little things like that, dealing with the house situation,” Schiro said. “I’ve definitely become more aware of my surroundings and what I have and what I’m grateful for.”

Her strong support system is something that’s helped Frankie persevere through the tough times.

“My mom and dad have never missed a doctor’s appointment or infusion,” Schiro said. “The two of them have been true people in my life, and then my sisters and the rest of my family have always been there too.”

Frankie Schiro is the essence of toughness. She puts that on display on the basketball court, the soccer field and in life.
