BELVIDERE (WREX) — More than 1,300 workers will be laid off at the Belvidere Chrysler Assembly plant later this spring, according to a Chrysler spokeswoman.
Jodi Tinson says the plant will return to a traditional two-shift operation beginning May 6, 2019. The move will impact 1,371 people.
Right now, the plant operates with three different crews that work four, 10-hour days over the course of six days. But starting in May, the plant will change to a traditional two-shift operation. Workers will work eight-hour shifts over five days; the plant will have two shifts.
A statement released about the layoffs says, “The company will make every effort to place indefinitely laid off hourly employees in open full-time positions as they become available based on seniority.”
The company says the move is to better align production with global demand. FCA notified the state of Illinois, the city of Belvidere and the UAW on Tuesday.
