Rockford Police raising money for new K9 unit

The Rockford Police Department says one of the things that helps it find guns, drugs and criminals are its K9 officers.

"Last year they responded to about 12,000 calls and they deployed the K9s about 770 times. Tracked 122 items. They helped us seize about $24,000 of cash. We utilize them every shift, every day," says Rockford Police Chief Dan O’Shea.

That’s is why the department is asking people to come out to its fundraiser next month to hopefully get a new K9 officer.

It’s September 13 at Josef’s Steakhouse. Tickets are $75. There will be food and drinks provided by celebrity bartenders like Chief O’Shea, as well as a K9 demonstration.

Last year, the event helped the department purchase K9 Officer Kai.

"Me and him are a direct result of the fundraiser last year, so your money does go to an important thing," says Officer Josh Carpenter, Kai’s handler. "We were happy about it last year; we’ll be even more happy about it this year adding a new officer."

Tickets are limited. CLICK HERE for more information on where to purchase one.
