Thick, black smokes takes over the sky after tires catch fire

CHICAGO (NBC) — Fire crews were called to battle a huge blaze on the South side of Chicago on Friday afternoon because a pile of tires caught fire.

According to Chicago Fire Media, a 40-foot pile of shredded rubber caught fire at 1:45 p.m. in an industrial area.

Firefighters and a level 1 HAZMAT team worked to contain the fire. Officials said crews would use a fire boat to put the flames out with river water.

No injuries have been reported.
